Did you sign up to throw your BFF a shower, like the awesome friend you are? But you’re just not satisfied resorting to the same old themes: footprints, say, or pink umbrellas?
Don’t worry, we’ve got five creative alternatives for any hip hostess!
Bun in the Oven
This tasty tongue-in-cheek theme will get your guests in the mood. The star of the show? Homemade cinnamon rolls (search the ‘net for the “original Cinnabon recipe.” The one you want uses almost two pounds of butter!) The aroma will fill the house and wrest appreciative oohs and ahhs from guests the minute they walk through the door.
To wash down these sticky treats, line up ice-cold bottles of milk, gussied up with Bun-in-the-Oven labels or a reminder that the baby girl en route is “Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice.” For take-home favors, set up baby shower cupcakes in bakers’ bags, “bun in the oven” novelty candles, or custom-labeled bags of gourmet coffee beans.
Consummate hostess Tori Spelling popularized this theme to celebrate the birth of her daughter, Stella. To “hang ten” like Tori, fill your pool with pink beach balls, treat your guests to manicures and sweeten them up with pink mocktails and personalized flip-flop cookies.
Like Tori, you could even indulge the other moms-to-be with “tummy tarot readings!” At other showers planned by the resourceful Ms. Spelling, guests painted ceramic tiles that later topped a table for the guest of honor; other celebrities have fashioned baby quilts from squares painted and pieced by guests.
The main idea: let your friends and family help you craft a lasting memento!
Sweet Baby Girl
This theme is ideal for any mom-to-be with a real sweet tooth! Start with table linens and cups in bright candy colors. Set up a candy buffet, wrapping the jars in pretty ribbons, and load up a cupcake tower with colorful treats.
Put out a book for guests to leave “sweet” notes for the parents. Use your computer to spell out the words S-W-E-E-T B-A-B-Y G-I-R-L on round 5-inch shapes; then print, cut, rim with glitter and string with ribbon or yarn: voila, chic and pretty bunting!
Candy topiaries make perfect decor for the tables, and over sized old-fashioned lollipops are the perfect backdrop for signs to mark your food, gift and signing stations. Make a personalized take-home bag for each guest so they can savor the sweetness later!
Know a mom who’s “born to be wild?” Start the party with some pink and black zebra stationery. Zing up the room with hot pink feather boas, and string up pink and orange paper lanterns or tissue-paper flowers.
Invest in a zebra-striped cake from your favorite bakery. Set up chilled bottles of pink and orange Lorina sparkling lemonade, tied off with bright ribbons: super-festive!
Use zebra fabric or wrapping paper for a table runner. Source some zebra ribbon from a craft store to add a jungle touch to any clear glass flower vases or favor boxes. Finally, top off the gift table with an adorable plush zebra!
A little princess is coming, so mom needs to celebrate in style! Dazzle your guests with rhinestone-studded invites, and tables draped in shiny, luxe fabrics. Wrap your flower vases in pretty gift paper, then glue rhinestones to the accents.
Hang clusters of pearlized balloons in shades of pink. Got a Bedazzler-type tool on hand? Bling up some lovely ribbons to wrap around cake or cupcake tower layers, then top off your confection with a sparkly mini tiara.
Thrift some sparkly, chunky necklaces to wrap around pastel pillar candles. Finally, gift your guests with a diamond-shaped paperweight, or pretty “Choice Crystal” favors.
