Diaper cakes are now a standard at baby showers. You would be hard-pressed to find a baby shower without this unique and modern centerpiece.
If you don’t know what diaper cake is, then let me give you a quick rundown. They are non-edible diaper structures created for two reasons.
The first reason is for beauty; they are proudly displayed as baby shower centerpieces.
The second reason is usefulness; they double as a valuable resource for the expecting parents. After the baby is born the new mom and dad can use the diapers and other baby goods attached to the cake.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, diaper cakes are spectacular because they are beautiful, useful and they come in all shapes and sizes. This gives you so much freedom when coming up with ideas for your diaper cake.
In this post we will explore some great diaper cake ideas and reveal to you how you can create something gorgeous for the expecting parents. You’ll learn about decorating trends to topper ideas and everything else in between.
Ideas To Build On
Lets start by teaching you the basics of building a three-tier diaper cake. Yes folks, three-tier cakes are what most baby shower hosts prefer to prepare because they are easy to build and even easier to decorate.
There are certain materials (or should I say ingredients) that you will need to construct this spectacular centerpiece. You will need:
- 63 diapers
- rubber bands of all shapes and sizes
- decorating ribbons, depending on your theme this will vary
- assorted baby items for each tier of the cake
- a glue gun
- a pair of scissors
- a paper towel tube for your center
- a cake base
- a diaper cake topper like a plush doll or toy
Okay, so now that we have all the ingredients we need to create this centerpiece let’s get down to the actual method. Other than one-on-one training nothing teaches better than video, so check this out:
The base of the cake or the first tier is comprised of 36 diapers. The first ring of six pre-rolled diapers goes around your paper towel tube (the center of the cake). Around those six diapers you will attach 12 more pre-rolled diapers forming the second ring. And finally, you will attach 18 more diapers around the second ring of 12 diapers giving you a total of three rings and 36 diapers. Your first tier is done! Lets move to the second tier.
The middle of the cake or the second tier is comprised of 18 pre-rolled diapers on top of the first tier. Follow the same exact instructions written above but instead of three rings just attach the first ring of six diapers around the paper towel tube and the second ring of 12 diapers around that. Thats it, you are all done with the second tier. Lets move on to the to the top and final tier.
The very top part of the diaper cake and the very final tier is comprised of only one ring of six diapers attached to the paper towel tube. Wasn’t that easy?
Now that you know how to build one, let’s take it step further and decorate the cake. Below I have several tips and bits of advice that can help you with your decorating efforts. Whatever your theme is or whatever gender you’re planning your baby shower around, you will be able to customize your diaper cake to match perfectly.
D.C. ideas for boys
This one is for the boys! First off, I want you to free your mind of old boring notions of traditional color patterns such as blue. Since there are so many wonderful colors that you can use for your boy baby shower theme. Why not apply that same attitude towards the diaper cake!
For example, If you’re having a cowboy theme why not decorate your three tier cake with dark brown satin ribbons and red sheer wire-edged ribbons to give it that rustic yet cute look. At the top of the cake you can place a Woody doll from the popular movie ‘Toy story’!
Another great idea is the jungle safari theme. First, wrap your diaper cake tiers with a wide green ribbon (Attach the ends with a glue gun) then wrap over that with orange wire-edged ribbons.
Tie the ends of the wire-edged ribbons to create beautiful little bows that you can puff out. For each tier you should add a cute little plush doll animal and at the very top, a lion plush doll.
You see, with a little planning you can make any baby shower diaper cake beautiful and unique. All you need is your creativity and decorating skills.
D.C. ideas for girls
There are so many things you can do with girl diaper cakes. Again, you don’t have to use traditional pink colors to decorate with. On the other hand, pink and brown color patterns are very popular these days.
You can wrap a nice pink satin ribbon around the first and top tier of the diaper cake and a brown ribbon on the middle tier. Remember to attach it all with your glue gun. At the very top of the cake place a cute little pink bunny or brown little monkey plush doll.
Another cool girl related diaper cake theme is the zebra theme. This is super easy and very popular these days. Go to your local arts and crafts store and get yourself some wide decorating ribbons with zebra patterns on them. Wrap each tier with the zebra pattern ribbon and at the very top of the diaper cake place a zebra plush doll. All done!
I’m sure you all can agree, it doesn’t get easier than that. However, some of you might be interested in something more complex, intricate and unique. If so, I have some ideas for you.
Unique diaper cake ideas
If you want something more rustic then maybe the John Deere tractor diaper cake is for you. You can make it with three wheels or four-wheel. It all depends on what kind of look you’re going for. It would go nicely with the cowboy theme I mentioned earlier.
One of my favorite types of DCs is the three-tier ‘smooth’ cake. Unlike the classic three tier cake which comprises of pre-rolled diapers; the smooth cake is made up of diaper wheels.
