I am a big fan of ‘mad men’; it’s style, the way the characters talk, the architecture, the set designs and the whole feel of the late 50s.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I don’t live in that era for several reasons that I’m sure you can all guess but there’s something beautiful about those days that has been romanticized in many books, songs, movies and TV shows.
It is also quite popular these days to give your baby shower a retro 1950s theme. If you’re one of those people who would like to stylize your bridal shower in this manner then please read on…
Blast From The Past Baby Shower Decor!
Okay, I’m only going to say this once. The people in a retro party (The Guests) are the decorations.
Make sure the men come dressed in suits with slicked back hair and make sure the women come dressed in one-piece dresses with flower prints on them.
Have your guests go to Google images and type in the word “1950s attire” so that they can get an idea on how to dress before they come to your party.
If you need a retro table cloth, vintage posters, old-style pictures and other decorations like that – Then I recommend that you ask your elderly neighbors and elderly family members for them.
You might be able to find them in your local second hand shop, in your attic, in your basement or at a yard/garage sale.
As for your centerpiece, you can use any pot or tea kettle that has a 1950s look to it but most people prefer to display their locally bought supermarket cake. More on that later in the food section of this post….
1950’s Baby Shower Food
I will say this, retro baby shower food is quite easy to plan as long as you exclude the alcoholic drinks which were very complex in that era.
For appetizers you should serve deviled eggs and/or ham and cheese sandwiches cut into finger strips.
For your main dish you should serve a delicious pot roast.
And for dessert, you should get your cake from your local supermarket.
I know many of you dislike the cheesy sugary ultra-colored icing cake that local supermarket are famous for, but that all originated in the 1950s.
Those unnatural oranges, blues and greens will fit perfectly into your retro baby shower and the best part, it’s all reasonably priced.
Don’t forget to ask the supermarket’s baker to decorate it in a 1950s fashion.
Retro Style Baby Shower Games
When it comes to retro games, you can modify a variety of traditional and modern baby shower games to fit this theme’s needs.
But if you’re looking for some authentic retro games then it’s time to have your guests do the ‘twist’.
That’s right, play some old 1950s music (Chuck Berry) and have your guests dance to it. Let the mother-to-be decide who the winner is.
Let your imagination run wild with this; you can have the guys do their best Elvis impression or you can give all your guests little baby dolls and black markers. Have your guest paint the dolls to look like Elvis.
Again, let the mother-to-be decide who the winner is.
Oh yeah, let’s not forget about musical chairs and the limbo. These classic retro games are always a party favorite, just play 1950s music in the background – you know the rules.
1950’s Color Schemes
Color schemes should always be on your baby shower to do list but….
It might be a little confusing organizing the color scheme for your baby shower.
Let’s face it, we have a clear and fixed picture of what the 1950s looked like but at the same time we don’t have a set idea of what it looked like.
In some books and TV shows you got pastel colors splashed all over backdrops and such. I am also sure you have seen brighter colors used in retro movies.
Luckily, I did a lot of research and I found that the colors below best represent the 1950s and its color scheme. Try to navigate your color sense using these colors:
